5 Spring Photography Tips to Make Your Edits Shine (Not Just Look Green) - Kelly McPhail Photography

Spring sessions are dreamy—lush greens, blooming flowers, and soft golden light. But if you’ve ever opened Lightroom and thought, “Why is this photo SOOO green?”… you’re definitely not alone. 🤭

Spring’s fresh growth can be magical and challenging for photographers, especially when it comes to editing. Here are five of my go-to spring photography tips to help you capture the magic of spring without fighting neon greens in post:

1. 🌿 Tame Those Greens in Lightroom

Spring greens tend to be ultra-saturated, and they can throw off skin tones fast. In Lightroom, try pulling the green saturation slider down just a bit. You can also shift the hue slightly if your greens are leaning too yellow or too limey. A little goes a long way here!

2. 🎨 Style with Intention

What your clients wear can make a huge difference in how spring tones show up in your photos. If your editing style isn’t super light-and-airy, pastels might not be your best friend. Instead, recommend soft neutrals, warm earth tones, or even bold hues that complement your unique style and the vibrant backdrop. Here’s my spring styling guide from a couple of seasons ago!

3. 🌷 Frame with Florals

Those low-to-the-ground blooms? They’re gold. Daffodils, tulips, and flowering bushes make for beautiful foreground interest. Don’t be afraid to get low with your angle to include them in your composition.

4. ☂️ Cloudy Days = Creamy Light

Don’t cancel a session just because the sun’s hiding. Overcast skies can be a gift, especially in spring. They create even, soft light that’s super flattering for skin tones and easy to edit. Plus, no harsh shadows to battle!

5. 🦮 Protect Your People

Spring fields = bugs. Especially ticks. Make it part of your session prep to pack bug spray and give clients a heads-up, particularly if little ones are tagging along. Comfort = better photos every time.

Spring brings the color, the light, and the vibes—but a little intention behind the lens and behind the screen can make all the difference. Hope these spring photography tips help you capture all the spring goodness!
