Pregnancy is such a beautiful, fleeting chapter—and if you’re anything like most mamas I photograph, you’re wondering: When is the best time to take maternity photos?
As a Greensboro maternity photographer, this is one of the most common questions I get, and it’s such an important one. Timing matters not only for your comfort, but for how you want to remember this incredible season of life.
So, When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos?
Generally, the sweet spot is between 30 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. Here’s why:
- Your bump has “popped” and is beautifully round and photogenic
- You’re likely still feeling fairly comfortable energetic, especially in the earlier part of that window
- We’re not cutting it too close in case baby decides to arrive early
Waiting too long can mean feeling extra tired, swollen, or even missing your session if baby comes early (yes, it’s happened!). Also, if you’re high risk or expecting multiples, consider booking closer to 28–32 weeks, since there’s a higher chance of an early birth.
But don’t stress if you’re past 36 weeks! We can still capture beautiful maternity photos later in your pregnancy. It just might mean a little more flexibility and extra comfort planning!

A Real-Life Example: Samantha’s Spring Session
Take Samantha’s recent outdoor maternity session as an example. We met in a wildflower field just outside of Greensboro, NC, when she was 32 weeks along. She wore a dreamy Fillyboo dress that flowed perfectly in field, and her husband and toddler joined in for some wonderful family photos too.
The timing was just right: Samantha looked radiant, her bump was beautifully visible, and she had the energy to laugh and play while her toddler ran through the flowers. These are the kinds of sessions I live for—real, playful, and full of love. This is what aim for with all of my client sessions!

Planning Ahead
If you’re still early in your pregnancy and trying to plan ahead, I always suggest reaching out in your second trimester to reserve your date. Maternity sessions are best booked early to make sure we have room on the calendar—especially in popular seasons like spring and fall here in Greensboro.
And if you’re drawn to a certain aesthetic—lush greens, soft florals, or warm autumn tones—consider what’s in season and reach out early. These dates fill up fast!
