Every year during the summer, I start getting a familiar question: “When’s the best time to book our fall family photos?”
Here’s the honest answer: it depends on what “fall” means to you. Because here in North Carolina, fall isn’t one look. It’s four!
Depending on when you book, your fall family photos can come out warm and summery, crisp and neutral, blazing with color, or soft and muted. All of it is fall. All of it is beautiful. The trick isn’t finding the “right” month. It’s figuring out which version of fall matches the family photos you actually want on your wall.
So let’s break it down.
September: Still Summer
If you book your fall family photos in Greensboro for September, don’t expect orange leaves. Expect warm (or very warm) evenings, green trees, wildflowers, and that last little bit of true summer light. For outfits, think flowy dresses, bare legs, sandals, and golden evening sun. It doesn’t look or feel like fall yet (and that’s exactly why a lot of families prefer this time of year).
September works especially well if your family is hot-natured, if you love a wildflower field over a leaf-covered trail, or if you just want your photos done before the calendar gets chaotic.

Early October: Fall-ish
Early October is the in-between season for fall family photos in the Triad, and it might be my favorite for families who want the fall feeling without the fall wardrobe stress. For outfits you can still wear warm neutrals, light layers, and either long or short sleeves depending on the weather. And for the setting, you’ll have beautiful greenery as your backdrop with just a hint of fall color starting to show.
This is the sweet spot if you want that cozy fall energy in your photos without needing jackets, and it’s also the easiest window for families with little ones who can overheat fast in layered outfits.

Late October: Peak Fall
This is the fall everyone has in mind when they say “I want fall family photos.” Sweaters, boots, layers, and all the fall color you could dream of. If you’ve got a vision board full of orange and red leaves, late October in NC is going to deliver it for you.
Note: Peak color also means peak demand. This is the window that tends to book up fastest every single year, so if this is the look you want for your family photos, don’t wait until September to reach out. (I typically announce the opening of my upcoming fall calendar in March and these peak dates fill up fast.)

November: Cozy and Earthy
By November, the bright colors have mostly given way to something quieter and more subtle. Cooler temperatures, fallen leaves, and those muted, earthy tones that feel a little more understated than a picture-perfect leaf backdrop. Cozy sweaters and textured layers do a lot of the visual work here.
If you’re drawn to a softer, moodier palette rather than saturated color, November is worth considering, especially for families who’d rather their outfits and their kids’ faces be the focal point instead of a wall of red and orange behind them.

What If You Don’t Love Colorful Leaves?
Here’s a belief I hold pretty firmly: you don’t have to love bright orange and red leaves to love fall photos. There are plenty of beautiful Triad locations that give you that timeless, seasonal feeling without putting your family directly in front of a wall of leaf color. Some of my favorite fall sessions have happened in fields that stayed green well into November.
There’s also nothing wrong with taking fall photos somewhere other than a field at all. An urban session at a spot like Revolution Mill can carry the same cozy-outfit, sweater-weather feeling with a completely different backdrop.

So before you automatically book the “peak fall” dates because that’s what everyone else seems to want, take a second to think about the look and the feeling you actually want in your photos. Warm and summery, fall-ish, peak color, or cozy and muted. There’s a right “fall” season for your family photos, and it might not be the one everyone else is booking!
So… which fall are you?
FAQs About Fall Family Photos in NC
How far in advance should I book fall family photos in Greensboro?
Fall (family and senior season especially) is one of my busiest stretches of the year, so the earlier you reach out to me, the more flexibility you’ll have on dates, especially if you have your heart set on late October’s peak color window. Honestly, spring is the best time to lock in your fall date. I typically announce the opening of my fall calendar in March every year.
Do I need to pick a specific “type” of fall before I book?
Not at all. Part of our consultation call is talking through exactly this: what look and feeling you’re going for, so we can land on a date and location that actually matches it, whether that’s a wildflower field in September or a color-drenched trail in late October.
What should we wear for each version of fall?
It depends on the look you’re going for! September calls for flowy dresses, sandals, and lighter fabrics. Early October is warm neutrals and light layers. Late October is where sweaters and boots really look amazing. November leans into cozy textures and muted, earthy tones. I send a full styling guide once you’re booked so you’re not guessing. And for all of my clients, I provide as much or as little styling guidance as you want or need.
Can we do fall photos somewhere other than a field of colorful leaves?
Of course! If bright oranges and reds aren’t your thing, we can choose locations that stay green or feel more timeless, including urban locations or studio-style sessions right here at Revolution Mill in Greensboro.
