Y’all, this session had so much to get excited about — the fields, the big open sky, and water to catch the light right at sunset. It’s one of my favorite locations because there’s so much variety, and my clients (Ava, in this case) get to choose which spots they love most! For Ava’s senior session, we captured some amazing images at an old barn, in a field full of grasses and wildflowers, and by a lake that turned gold right at just the right time. Here are a few glimpses of Ava’s senior photos.
The Barn
We started at an old barn just outside Greensboro (one of my favorite local spots). The wood is weathered in exactly the right way, and there’s an old tractor out front. Together, they gave us the kind of country backdrop you can’t fake — no props, no styling, just weathered wood and rust doing all the work for us!
Ava started in a simple white dress leaned up against the fence rail, and I knew right away this session was going to be a good one. Relaxed. A little playful. Not trying too hard, in the best way. Just being her wonderful self!
Then she changed into a floral dress and denim vest for a few by the tractor. I love those painted barn quilts behind her. Ava had a whole plan for her outfits going into the session, and that’s something I always encourage: bring options, and we’ll figure out together which one fits which spot.
Into the Field
From the barn, we walked out into the tall grass, right as the light started doing that thing it only does for about twenty minutes each day. I keep things loose during a session but I also give lots of direction (less “pose like this,” more “just walk toward me and laugh at whatever ridiculous thing I just said”), and it works every time. Boots kicked up in the grass, hair catching the last bit of sun of the day. I love these shots!
Down by the Water
We then made our way to a little lake right as the sky turned that hazy pink. It’s only that color for a few minutes, and I always aim to be in the perfect spot when the sky does its magic. Ava changed into a lace top and denim shorts for this part, and we found a big flat rock at the edge of the water that was a perfect perch. A litte bit further, a patch of wildflowers gave us one last spot before we lost the best light of the day.
By this point in a session, most of my clients have forgotten the camera’s even there, which is exactly the goal.
The Cap and Gown
We wrapped up just as the light was nearly gone and a brought out the cap and gown out for a few last celebratory shots. Sometimes gown on works, but my favorites are usually the gown over one shoulder or cap in hand. Of course, hands in the air or a heel kick shows off Ava’s personality a bit.
I never take for granted that families trust me to capture images celebrating not only what their senior has accomplished but also what’s coming next.
