Graduation season is one of my favorite times of year. There’s something about the joy, the pride, the sigh of relief, and the huge smiles that make college grad photos so so special. So far this year, I’ve been lucky enough to take college grad photos for students from High Point University, Wake Forest, UNCG, Elon, UNC, and NC A&T. Each session has reminded me just how important it is to pause and document this moment before the next big adventure begins!

If you’re gearing up for your own graduation photo session, here are 5 tried-and-true tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and fully celebrated. These little things can make a really big difference in how your college grad photos turn out—and how you feel during the shoot!

1. Comfy shoes are a must

You might be dreaming of wearing those cute heels or dress shoes, but believe me: walking across campus in them will get old and get old fast. Definitely bring your stylish shoes for the actual photos, but plan to wear sneakers or slides between locations. Most campuses are bigger than they seem when you’re dressed up and walking in heels carrying extra things!

2. Steam that gown

Graduation gowns are notorious for wrinkling. They come folded in a plastic package and rarely lay flat unless you prep them first. At mininum, hang yours up a few days before. But if at all possible, give it a good steam (or warm iron inside out) the night before your shoot. (You can also try hanging it up in your bathroom where steam from a shower can help any wrinkles fall out.) Showing up with a fresh, crisp gown makes a huge visual difference.

3. Aim for golden hour

Lighting matters more than you might think. That golden hour glow (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) gives your photos a soft, dreamy feel. Plus, if your campus tends to get crowded during graduation season, an early morning session can help us beat the rush and get the best light. So if you’re an early riser, keep that in mind!

4. Bring your people

Your college years weren’t just about classes—they were about the people who made them meaningful. Bring your roommate, your best friend, your sibling, your partner—whoever feels like part of your college story. They can hop in a few frames, hold your stuff, or just hype you up along the way. Grad photo sessions are super fun anyway, but having your besties along will make it even more memorable!

5. Make it personal

What makes your college journey unique? Bring items that reflect that—a decorated cap, a stole or cords you earned, champagne to pop, biodegradable confetti, even your dog or favorite books. These small touches make your session feel like you and help tell your story beyond just the cap and gown.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind:

Wardrobe choices matter: Solid colors or subtle patterns often photograph best, and they won’t compete with your gown or backdrop. Think about the vibe you want: classic and timeless? Trendy and fun? This is your moment, so choose outfits that make you feel amazing.

Think ahead about posing: If you feel awkward in front of the camera, you’re not alone! That’s where I come in. I’ll guide you through natural, flattering poses that highlight your personality. But it doesn’t hurt to scroll through your Pinterest board or favorite IG posts to spark ideas you love.

Trust your photographer (that’s me!): I’ll help with locations, lighting, posing, and even keeping track of your cap and tassel. My goal is to make the session feel effortless and fun—so you can focus on soaking in the moment.
