As soon as we stepped onto the sand for the Schneider’s family photos at Holden Beach, the wind picked up. Not just a little wind, but a lot of wind! The most wind I’ve ever shot a session in.
Sand was whipping in their faces, stinging their legs, and hair was flying every where (mine included)! I could tell the kids weren’t too happy. They were also pretty tired from a long day playing on the beach.
So you do the math.
Tired kids + strong winds + flying sand = ______.
We had all the ingredients for a recipe for disaster…

I have to admit that I almost threw in the towel, and I was more than a little worried that it might not go well. And it very well could have gone horribly, but it didn’t.
And do you know what made this such a successful family photoshoot?
Relaxed, loving, and upbeat parents!
Justin and Linsley’s positive attitudes and encouraging presence made ALL the difference! They were the reason that their kids could press on in the midst of a trying set of circumstances. They were the reason that we made magic together in the middle of a windstorm!
Look, I’m not here to judge your parenting style. I am by no means a perfect parent. But after shooting hundreds of family photo sessions, I have observed over and over that:
Stressy parents = stressy kids
You know this. Kids are copying us all the time. If we are relaxed and having fun, they will most likely as well. The best thing we can give our kids during the photoshoot is a positive attitude no matter how they act.
That’s why I suggest…
No harsh words.
No condescending remarks.
No threats.
No consequences.
I know it’s so hard… I get it! I don’t always get it right with my kids either (just ask my husband!), but if you’re after those sweet moments of love and connection, then it’s essential that YOU, the parents, set the tone.
I promise that the more fun YOU have at your family session, the better your family photos will be and the more you will enjoy them!
